Former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth has openly criticized MS Dhoni, saying it’s time for the legendary player to retire from the Indian Premier League (IPL). After Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost to Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, they are now likely to finish last this season.
Srikkanth believes Dhoni’s performance shows that he is struggling and should consider stepping away from the game.
“If You Can’t Perform, Walk Away”: Srikkanth’s Strong Words
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth pointed out that Dhoni’s fitness and reflexes are not what they used to be. At 43 years old, Dhoni is facing difficulties against spinners and can no longer play his trademark big shots with ease.
“You can’t keep coming and messing it up. If you’re not able to do it, admit it and walk away,” Srikkanth said.
“His reflexes are slower, and his knees may not be holding up. His overall fitness has declined, and the team’s top order is also struggling.”
Dhoni’s Role and Future in Question
Srikkanth questioned what role Dhoni should play if he continues—whether as captain, wicketkeeper, or finisher—given his declining performance. He said Dhoni is no longer the player who could dominate bowlers with ease, especially against spinners.
CSK’s Poor Season Comes to an End
CSK failed to reach the playoffs for the second year in a row, and their latest loss has almost confirmed their place at the bottom of the points table. Dhoni, who returned as captain mid-season due to Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, couldn’t turn the team’s fortunes around.
Dhoni Reaches Personal Milestone Despite Team’s Loss
Despite the loss, Dhoni achieved a major personal milestone. He became the fourth Indian player to hit 350 sixes in T20 cricket. He now joins the elite list with:
- Rohit Sharma – 542 sixes
- Virat Kohli – 434 sixes
- Suryakumar Yadav – 368 sixes
The global leader remains Chris Gayle, with a record 1,056 sixes.
A Disappointing End to Dhoni’s Innings
Dhoni scored 16 runs off 17 balls in what could be one of his last IPL appearances. He was dismissed just before the end of the first innings after trying to scoop a full toss. The ball landed in Tushar Deshpande’s hands at short fine leg, ending Dhoni’s innings with a smile but possibly marking the end of an era.
