Football legend Lionel Messi has finally revealed his favorite goal – and surprisingly, it’s not a long-range stunner or a magical dribble. Instead, it’s a rare header he scored in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United.
Messi scored that goal for Barcelona, helping them win 2-0 and lift the Champions League trophy. “I’ve scored many beautiful and important goals, but that header against Manchester United will always be my favorite,” Messi said in a recent statement.
That moment is now being turned into a unique piece of art in collaboration with digital artist Refik Anadol. The artwork will be displayed and auctioned by Christie’s in New York on June 11, with all proceeds going to charity.
Messi and Anadol will personally sign the piece, making it even more special. The project is part of Messi’s new campaign called “A Goal in Life”, which is run by the Inter Miami Foundation. UEFA has granted the foundation global rights to share the image of that iconic goal.
Anadol shared that he’ll use AI and biosensing technology to turn the emotions and energy of that goal into a visual masterpiece. “It’s more than just a goal; it’s a memory, a human moment captured in time,” he said.
Messi, who has played for Argentina, Barcelona, PSG, and now Inter Miami, has scored over 800 goals in his career and has won the Ballon d’Or eight times.
Now, through this campaign, his favorite goal will help bring change in real life too.
