Nepal Premier League Second Edition Begins Today with Janakpur–Kathmandu Clash

Nepal Premier League first match

The Nepal Premier League Second Edition officially kicks off today at the newly improved Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. This sets the stage for nearly a month of high-intensity cricket. The much-anticipated opening fixture will feature defending champions Janakpur Bolts facing their familiar rivals Kathmandu Gurkhas at 4 PM. This will be preceded by a grand opening ceremony scheduled for 2 PM. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has confirmed that all preparations have been finalized for the league’s return, which promises a bigger scale, better facilities, and elevated fan experience.

Upgraded Kirtipur Stadium Hosts Entire Tournament

One of the major highlights of the Nepal Premier League Second Edition is the significant renovation of the Kirtipur Cricket Stadium. This venue will host all matches throughout the tournament. The infrastructure upgrade includes newly constructed parapets designed to seat up to 10,000 spectators. This ensures a more comfortable and organized viewing experience for cricket lovers.

For the first time in the venue’s history, state-of-the-art floodlights have been installed, opening the door for night matches. This development marks a historic moment not only for the stadium but also for domestic cricket. It aligns Nepal’s home venues with international standards and enhances broadcast quality for global audiences.

The entire tournament, running from November 17 to December 13, will feature 32 matches, including league-stage fixtures, three playoff games, and the grand final.

New Coaches, New Strategies, and High Expectations

The eight participating franchises have undergone a series of strategic changes ahead of the Nepal Premier League Second Edition, especially in the coaching department.

Janakpur Bolts Strengthened by West Indies Icon

Defending champions Janakpur Bolts will enter the tournament under the leadership of Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Chanderpaul is one of the most respected figures in West Indies cricket. He replaces former Nepal head coach Pubudu Dassanayake. His fresh tactics, vast experience, and calm presence will enhance a team already known for consistency and determination.

Janakpur, who lifted the title in the league’s inaugural season, will be keen to begin their campaign on a strong note as they take on Kathmandu— the very side they defeated in last year’s title clash.

Kathmandu Gurkhas Appoint Monti Desai

On the other side, Kathmandu Gurkhas have appointed former Nepal national team coach Monti Desai as their head coach for the current edition. Desai is known for his disciplined coaching approach and a keen eye for player development. He aims to transform Kathmandu into a well-structured and tactically sound unit. His presence adds depth to the Kathmandu camp as they seek redemption after last season’s heartbreak.
